13 Apr 2008: Grasshoppers 4:2 Tenterten Tigers April 22, 2008
Posted by editor in : Uncategorized , add a commentI wasn’t actually at this match, so I can’t report other than as I’ve heard from various sources. It sounds as though the game was very similar to the last game between the two teams, except this time we held our nerve, finished our chances and defended better.

Posted by editor in : Uncategorized , add a commentThis was our first setback since the first day of the season, though we were not helped by not arriving at the ground until 10 minutes before kick off. Tenterden is further than most of us go on our holidays, so what on earth they are doing in our league is beyond me. That’s not to say they were anything other than gracious hosts, it’s just that the ground was well hidden and Mrs McLeod would have preferred a ladies loo to having to share with Goggy. To be fair, she seemed unfazed, but Goggy had terrible trouble going.

It was also important to win the match if we have any ambitions to win the league. With many of the players from both sides knowing each other from school, it was also a fight for the bragging rights for the next few weeks.

Posted by editor in : Uncategorized , add a commentThis was the quarter final of the Cup, against opposition from several leagues above us (again). Hove were the best side we have played this season by a long way, but our performance was so far below our normal standard that it’s hard to judge how much better than us they were. There is of course no disgrace being beaten at any sport by better players, but we have never before lost a game because the other team showed more commitment than us. And as someone who really enjoys watching this group of boys, I hope I never see that again!

Posted by editor in : Uncategorized , add a commentThis match represented our opportunity to set the record straight against Rusthall, who beat us 1-0 in the first game of the season- our only loss in the league so far. The pitch must have been close to being declared unplayable, with frost making it hard and slippery, but the ref decided that it was playable.

Posted by editor in : Uncategorized , add a commentThe most amazing thing about this game was that it was played at all. There was no standing water on the pitch, but the combination of the gale force wind and driving rain/hail, which kept up for the whole match, made these the worst conditions that any of our players are ever likely to play in. In the circumstances, the players from both sides deserve great credit for producing any kind of game, let alone the exciting end to end cup tie, which was eventually decided in the very last minute of the game. I’m told that the Grasshoppers medical insurance will cover the players for the pneumonia most of them are bound to contract over the next few days.

Posted by editor in : Uncategorized , add a commentThis was the first time for ages that the guys let their performance levels fall below the levels which Keith, Phil and themselves have set. The really good news is that, even playing as badly as we did, we still won, which is a really good quality for any team to have. The bad news is that all the parents watching aged about 15 years between having to listen to Connor’s dog barking and watching our defence self destruct. Phil looked physically sick at times and Keith, who was on the phone and getting it second hand from Ian, caused a little cloud of blue air to hover around Ian’s head.

Posted by editor in : Uncategorized , add a commentAfter the excellent performance last week, where we thrashed a good Hailsham side, we were due for a wake up call, playing a team which is currently fourth in the Sussex Premier league- at least three leagues above us. It was bitterly cold, the wind was howling a gale and our chances did not look good. It was like watching Brazil in the
