This was the first time for ages that the guys let their performance levels fall below the levels which Keith, Phil and themselves have set.  The really good news is that, even playing as badly as we did, we still won, which is a really good quality for any team to have.  The bad news is that all the parents watching aged about 15 years between having to listen to Connor’s dog barking and watching our defence self destruct.  Phil looked physically sick at times and Keith, who was on the phone and getting it second hand from Ian, caused a little cloud of blue air to hover around Ian’s head.

After the excellent performance last week, where we thrashed a good Hailsham side, we were due for a wake up call, playing a team which is currently fourth in the Sussex Premier league- at least three leagues above us.  It was bitterly cold, the wind was howling a gale and our chances did not look good.  It was like watching Brazil in the

Arctic Circle .  And samba football is more suited to beaches than tundra.

First the good news.  The nationwide manhunt has been successful and the left back has been found and reunited with his team. 

Harrison ’s return led to such heartwarming comments as “where the hell have you been?” and “nice of you to turn up”.  Isn’t it lovely to see a happy ending?

The team obviously felt my absence this week, missing my motivational skills on the touchline, which took the edge off the performance, as we scored four fewer than we did against the same opposition last week!  But we also conceded four fewer, and Keith and Phil afterwards called this the best team performance they have seen from this team- which is high praise indeed.
