11 March 2007 Grasshoppers 3 Hassocks 1 and Grasshoppers 2 Hassocks 2 April 25, 2007

Another interesting weekend!  We played very well for most of both games and I thought the first game accurately reflected the relative abilities of both teams- ie we’re better than they are!  Shame we couldn’t hold on to win the second game as well, but that’s life.

I don’t think we have ever played in a game where someone was red carded, so that’s a first for most of us.  I think most of us would agree that the ref didn’t have his best day ever, but we really must learn that we can’t talk back without getting into trouble.  The ref said afterwards that the Hassocks player was given a straight red card for trying to elbow him and for foul and abusive language.  Nothing at all about either the foul or subsequent punch on Skelly!  James was given two yellow cards for dissent, the second after the final whistle.

Turning to the football, we defended much better against their height this time and I thought we demonstrated very clearly that we are the better team.  I know I’m biased, but I thought we were stronger, quicker and more skilful in every area of the pitch.  We have now played them three times and our head to head record is slightly better, in that we beat them by two goals and lost to them by one.  Unfortunately, our early season hiccups mean that we probably won’t catch them now unless they have a couple of bad results.

We didn’t announce man of the match on Sunday, but over the two matches no one worked harder than Craig and he also popped up with a couple of important goals.  Other scorers were Jake with a well taken penalty, Ben and J-P with a long range effort which made their keeper look a bit foolish.

Other honourable mentions to Matt (yet again!), Callum and Nip who played about every position on the field.

CRAP award this week to James I’m afraid.  Enough said!  Craig- I’d make sure he’s cooled down a bit before giving him your boots otherwise you may be wearing them other than as the manufacturer intended.

One serious point for the players to consider please.  We have 12 players signed on, of whom 6 want to play up front, 4 in midfield, 2 in defence and no one in goal.  Unless we are prepared to take the field in a formation never seen before, even at

Man

City under Kevin Keegan, some of you are going to have to play in positions which would not be your first choice.  When you are asked to play somewhere that you consider out of position, then please accept it with good grace and give 100% in that position.  If you are substituted, then by all means be disappointed, but please keep that disappointment to yourself.  We are able to make 3 changes during the game, so with one sub, if you are taken off there is every chance that you will get back on.  Over recent weeks there have been incidences of players complaining, sulking and maybe even not trying when they feel they are being played out of position.  This is very unfair on the other lads who play week in and week out in positions they would rather not and it also really annoys Gordon and I, who want to see the whole team working as a unit.  Please try and see it from the point of view of the whole team and not just your own personal view.
