‘The Edge’ - Home v Sevenoaks Town Rovers December 18, 2007

Some say, he collects CD’s with UK names and addresses on and he taught Rhydian to sing and colour his hair, all we know is that he provides anonymous match reports and calls himself ‘The Edge’…

After last week’s Tsunami soccer, it was a new event named "sub zero soccer" this week. What was that on the hill, a big white dog, a small Shetland pony or given the conditions it may even have been a polar bear, what ever it was, it was treated to a feast of football.

This weeks performance against Sevenoaks was probably one of the best team performances to date. Everyone played in support of each other and took responsibility for their own role within the team. This attitude to playing brought a result to merit the performance as Grasshoppers ended as worthy 8-0 winners. Sevenoaks had held out for the first twenty-five minutes of the first half, but that last five minutes was mesmerising with four goals from the team.  “C League, your’re havin’ a laugh” the assembled crowds were about to sing, but the frost bite had set in by then and Andy was still so dazed that he couldn’t remember the words anyway.

From front to back everyone performed. Henry grows in confidence each week and takes increasing control of his area, with his catching, kicking and distribution all considerably improved, even when he has so little to do!

The back four were solid and disciplined, marshalled by Harry C (not Crispy) who led by example and was supported in the middle by ‘Lamps’, who looks ever more at home and provides good no nonsense cover, when he’s not committed to a tackle. The fullbacks of Tommy and Crispy showed excellent pace and support in pushing forward up the flanks and providing further attacking options.

The midfield of Fergus Jarvis Josh and Brandon battled hard and played intelligent football laying some excellent through balls for Toby and Freddie up front. Good to see Fergus get a brace of goals as a reward for all the excellent hard work in every game.

It was great to see Toby end his goal drought and turn famine to feast, though at one point it looked like his misfortune might continue as his first shot sliced wide. There were mutterings that Hell might freeze over before Toby scored again, and that may well have been the case when not long after Jarvis had opened the scoring from Toby’s excellent back headed flick on up popped ‘hungry’ Toby at the back post to break the jinx with a tidy left foot tap in. Richard headed off on a touchline run a la Martin O’Neil, Phil and Kate were hugging on the touchline, his grandad was extolling the virtues of being able to kick with two feet, whilst Toby breathed a huge sigh of relief.

Oh yes and ‘Old Nick’ was seen to be doing up his skates before hitting the ice! Have I mentioned how cold it was?

Toby managed to grab two more goals of a standard that said that he’d firmly laced up the shooting boots and normal service had been resumed. His second goal was a great finish into the left of the net following a run down the right, some excellent team play culminated with Jarvis making a great pass to split the Sevenoaks defence and set Toby on his run.

Jarvis also grabbed a couple more in the style to which we have all become accustomed and again impressed with his work rate, vision and attitude which raised the whole teams performance, a great Captain’s performance, well done!

The introduction of the changes with Callum, William and Regan coming on was testament to the performance of the whole squad as the flow of the play and the team performance was unaffected. Indeed the changes were seamless with the subs coming on and putting in as much as those they had replaced.

For much of both halves the Grasshoppers played neat passing football, largely in the Sevenoaks half. Indeed so under employed was Nigel, doing Lino duties for the match, that at one point early on he was seen to be lighting a fire to try and keep warm, by the end of the game he had been unemployed for so long that he’d acquired a sleeping bag, a dog on a string and the spectators were throwing him loose change, but enough about his day job…

Anyway enough about the staff. The performance was superb, full of effort, application and commitment from every member of the team. These kinds of performance bring these kind of results, so keep it going lads.

Remember to read next week’s xmas special report on the annual Lad’s v The Dad’s, come on Dad’s lets get out there and help these coaches out, going by the way the boys are playing they will need it!

Oh yes, and did I mention that it was very cold!
