‘The Edge’ - Home Game v Jarvis Brook ‘B’ December 10, 2007

Some say he’s a judge on Strictly Come Dancing, but could still sort out Floyd Mayweather once and for all, all we know is that he provides anonymous match reports and calls himself ‘The Edge’

This week doesn’t give a lot of room for commentary on the overall performance as Grasshoppers V Jarvis Brook B was a game of two halves, half typhoon / half hurricane. Indeed at one point some of the spectators were seen to be buying canoes and taking out huge insurance policies as it was felt that there might be a few pounds to be made and wives to abandon.

In the pre-match team talk rumour had it that Regan and Freddie were seen putting bricks in their boots to stop them being blown away, such was the ferocity of the wind.

The conditions were such that it looked as though you wouldn’t be able to pass wind with any accuracy never mind a football, but the conditions were the least of our worries. There was pride at stake and we had a point to prove!

The lads came out with not a care of the conditions. The team talk was obviously a case of Rich giving it his best “How very dare they” and sending the boys out to show that the league’s decision to allocate them a ‘C’ Division slot was as ill conceived as General Galtieri’s when he said, “Lets just sneak in no one will mind”.

Right from the warm up you could see that the boy’s were up for it, everyone focused and brimming with confidence and obviously out to show that the Grasshoppers deserved a bit more respect!

The referee blew his whistle (with not quite as much gusto as the prevailing wind) and the match began. To the credit of both teams, they had come to play football and that is what they did, playing intelligent passes and keeping the ball on the deck. Fergus and Tommy looked particularly effective going down the right flank and on a number of occasions looked to have broken down the Jarvis Brook defence, but Freddie’s bricks had weighed him down to the extent that he struggled to get back from his encampment in No Man’s Land and several times was caught off side when through on goal. He did however redeem himself when a good passing move down the left saw the ball pulled back for him to slot home from six yards out.

Matt again started in the centre of defence and looked confident and assured in the role, tidying up a few times when Jarvis Brook pressed forward. It has to be said, however, that in all the catalogues where football boots are sold, they are sold in pairs, the left boot costing the same as the right, and believe it or not, it is capable of performing the same job. Harry Coleman surprised the assembled masses recently by showing that the left foot is not merely an aid to balance but can be introduced as an effective ball striking tool, so come on Matt get that left peg working. That said Matt might have found his natural home in the centre of defence.

Josh, Jarvis and Toby showed why they have been invited up to the Inter League Training with their runs, passing and general awareness of play. However it should be noted that a number of others demonstrated that they have the ability to join them with the team play and attitude they displayed in very testing conditions. Keep going lads. You’ve all got what it takes.

As the game progressed the conditions worsened. The rain, along with the pitch got heavier to the point where Henry had to be thrown a rope to pull him from the mud in the goal mouth. After 25 minutes the referee with, more insight than Michael Fish, predicted that the wind and rain was going to worsen and wisely abandoned the match.

Rich couldn’t understand it and was heard to be reminiscing about dubbin, leather boots, laced football’s, the playstation generation, jumpers for goal posts and that when he was a lad etc etc………..

Credit should be given to both teams and the spirit that they approached a game in dreadful conditions. Hopefully this week will see the last of these conditions and we can get back to showing how we’ve been underrated and dissed! Come on the’Hoppers!!!!

A final mention to William, good to see you back and look forward to seeing you secure your place in the team.
