After the last game the coaches have clearly been reading the Kevin Keegan tactics book as the boys lined up with a 3-4-3 formation, partly due to a number of the usual defenders wimping out, no pressure on Matt ‘Ole Gunnar Super Sub’ Lampard then who made his debut at centre back!
Right from the off it was set for all out attack in true Cup Game tradition, Langton Green bought the ball straight up the pitch, while our boys were still trying to catch their breath from the sprint race competition held during the warm up, luckily as everyone looked to Henry he dived on the ball to kill the attack.
One minute gone and after a sigh of relief from the home fans, the boys quickly moved into attack bursting down the field, the Langton keeper couldn’t quite get hold of a shot and great play from Harry M saw him chase the ball down, round the keeper, and put it in the net. Two minutes gone, 1-0 to Grasshoppers, the boys were clearly going for it. It was end to end stuff with some great passing and movement and chances for both teams with Henry making great stop after seven minutes from a Langton Green corner.
Fergus and Jarvis were working well on the wings, tracking back and moving the ball well when, in the ninth minute, Jarvis made a great strike from the left edge of the box into the top right corner, 2-0 Grasshoppers, I nearly spilt my tea! Shortly after, Toby, playing on the left of the front three made a good run into the box only to be brought down, penalty. Jarvis put it away well and so it was 3-0 after eleven minutes, much to the stunned onlookers surprise, clearly I’d have to wait till half time to go get that bacon roll, highly recommended they are too!
The central midfield pair of Harry and Josh were winning their tackles and moving the ball well, with good link up play to Freddie and bringing Callum into play on the right, Toby even tried a strike with his left boot following orders from his Grandad on the touchline! With the first half pretty much over Jarvis completed his hattrick, 4-0 didn’t really reflect the effort Langton had put in, but credit to the Grasshoppers as they were really on their game, but could they keep this up in the second half ?
Langton Green started well, showing a great attitude, good team spirit, encouraging each other and demonstrated a great drive to fight back. Grasshoppers didn’t work as well as they had in the first half, a worrying pattern lately, and despite the score it was still an open game, even having Pat on the pitch sporting his "dont mess with me" black eye didn’t put Langton off! The back three of Brandon (another good performance) Crispy and ‘Ole’ Lampard, or is that now ‘John Terry’…..were all busy, but defended well.
With five minutes to go Langton drew one back, it was no less than they deserved and followed a bit of a gift by Crispy, clearly too busy admiring his new Captain’s armband! It set up an all action finish with Freddie scoring next with a good strike on the rebound, shortly followed by a further goal from Langton who chipped Henry from the edge of the area.
5-2 then and its into the Quarter Final in January, well done boys!
