Saturday saw the team taking on a struggling East Grinstead Meads side on a big sloping pitch in cold and windy conditions.

A slow start contributed to East Grinstead taking an early lead which was the first time they’ve gone in front this season according to one of their supporters. Following some quizzical looks and finger pointing at the back the Grasshoppers upped their game and ensured that the Meads joy was short lived.

Brandon, following a brave pill, a moment of madness or a desire to be John Terry put himself in the line of fire with a brave challenge resulting in him having to leave the field with an injury sustained in the process. This brought Matt ‘Ole Gunnar Super Sub’ Lampard into the foray. A burst of attacking play saw the ball played out from the back, up the left flank where it arrived with Toby in front of goal, being quickly closed down laid off a pass to ‘Ole’ Lampard to come in from the right to slot home with a sweetly struck shot having only been on the pitch for a minute. ‘Ole’ claimed a second a minute into the second half pushing the coaches hard for a starting place.

Jarvis worked tirelessly in most positions, that weren’t being filled by an equally busy Fergus.

Half time saw Henry pick up a freak back injury requiring him to come off. So concerned was Leigh that having carefully led him from the field and put him in the car, he quickly came back to watch the second half! Hope the injury is better soon Henry, get your Mum to let us know how you are, as your Dad probably won’t know. Filling the gloves and a much smaller part of the goal was Regan who maintained a clean sheet in the second half.

The back four were as dependable and well drilled as ever. Crispy, Brandon, an ever improving Callum and Harry making few mistakes. The midfield produced some good interplay with Freddie and Josh battling hard and Freddie being rewarded with a goal in each half.

Toby playing on the left showed good vision and played some intelligent balls and looked equally comfortable on either foot, much to his Grandfathers delight.

So 4-1 to the Grasshoppers but to their credit an improving Meads pushed the whole way and it could be said gave their opponents a lesson on keeping their heads up, playing for each other and battling to the final whistle. None of them gave up, got a gob on, gave up trying or displayed a bad attitude.

Yes Grasshoppers you know who you are!!
